Welcome to Music at St. Martin's
MUSIC AT ST MARTIN’S came into being as a result of a happy collaboration between the then rector Michael Thompson, John & Joy Pye, Stephen Johnston and Paul White (then Director of Music at the Endowed Schools), whose love of music encouraged them to hold regular concerts in the glorious acoustics of this historic church. As the momentum grew, a number of concerts were organised with visiting choirs and groups, supported by local hotels and businesses who took advertising space in concert programmes.
A Handel’s Messiah workshop was arranged with Paul White as the director and we were delighted when the singers included Lady Victoria, Simon Leatham, Miranda and Orlando Rock. Fergus Black became Director of Music at the benefice and was persuaded to support the Music at St Martin’s initiative, bringing together talented local musicians to give concerts, including a group of women singers who became known as the St Martins Singers.
The initial ideas - to enable more people to appreciate the building, to raise the musical profile of this magnificent church in Stamford and to help raise funds for its maintenance - remain at the centre of Music at St Martin’s.
We now have a formal structure, with charitable status and over the years Music at St Martin’s has succeeded in making a substantial contribution to the Fabric Fund. However, with the necessity for expensive work on the church roof, combined with rising costs, the committee wishes to make a more valuable contribution to this vital work.
With a view to raising significant sums towards the maintenance of St Martin’s Church, we are trying to establish sponsorship as a regular feature of our Concert Seasons and are especially grateful to The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, John & Joy Pye and Bill & Sue Clements – all of whom are sponsoring concerts again in 2017. We also owe a debt of gratitude to our Presidents Miranda & Orlando Rock, and many others including the following who have supported us in various ways: Lady Victoria & Mr Simon Leatham, The Forbes Charitable Trust, Martin & Loraine Bust, Tim & Stefa Hart, Adnams of Southwold, Dan Williams of Ink Design & Print (Peterborough) together with the Incumbent, Church Wardens & PCC of St Martin’s.
We hope you will enjoy the exciting series of events in our 2018 Season of Music at St Martin’s.
